What is Mogadon (Nitrazepam) Powder used for?

Mogadon is used for the short term treatment of severe sleeplessness (also known as insomnia) which is disabling, or subjecting you to unacceptable distress. It can help overcome any difficulties in getting to sleep, but does not cure the underlying cause of your insomnia.

How to take Mogadon (Nitrazepam) Powder

  • Before you start the treatment, read the manufacturer’s printed information leaflet from inside the pack. It will give you more information about nitrazepam, and it will also provide you with a full list of the side-effects which you could experience from taking it.
  • The usual dose is 5 mg taken just before going to bed; your dose, however, could be more or less than this. Your doctor may recommend that you take a dose for just a few days, or only on certain days of the week. It is important that you take nitrazepam exactly as your doctor tells you to.

Getting the most from your treatment

  • Try to keep any appointments with your doctor. This is so your doctor can check how you are feeling.
  • The effects of nitrazepam can last into the following day; please be aware that it is likely to impair your judgement and reactions, and so affect your ability to drive. It is an offence to drive while your reactions are impaired, so do not drive until you know how you react, especially when you first start treatment. Even if your driving ability is not impaired, should you drive, you are advised to carry with you some evidence that the medicine has been prescribed for you – a repeat prescription form or a patient information leaflet from the pack is generally considered suitable.
  • Do not drink alcohol while you are on nitrazepam. It will increase the risk of sedative side-effects.
  • If you are due to have an operation or any dental treatment, please tell the person carrying out the treatment that you are taking a benzodiazepine. This is because nitrazepam increases the effects of some anaesthetics.
  • Your doctor may recommend that you reduce your dose gradually when it is time to stop taking it. This is to reduce the risk of you experiencing withdrawal effects. Follow carefully any instructions your doctor gives to you.

How should I use this medication?

The recommended adult dose of nitrazepam when taken for insomnia is 5 mg to 10 mg taken at bedtime.

Seniors may be more likely to experience unwanted effects of this medication and should start with 2.5 mg taken at bedtime.

The lowest effective dose should be used. It is important that the dose be individualized to your specific needs to avoid excessive drowsiness during the day time or motor impairment.

This medication is normally used for a short period of time or as an “as required” medication. As it may be habit-forming, the treatment period should be as short as possible and not usually longer than 7 to 10 consecutive days. If you need this medication for more than 2 to 3 weeks, consult your doctor for a re-evaluation of this medication.

When taken for treatment of myoclonic seizures, the dose is based primarily on body weight. The dose for children (up to 30 kg of body weight) ranges from 0.3 mg per kilogram of body weight to 1 mg per kilogram of body weight daily in 3 divided doses. Your doctor will calculate an appropriate dose.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

Nitrazepam may be habit-forming when taken for long periods of time. It may not be appropriate for people who have a history of alcohol or substance abuse.

If you have been taking this medication regularly, even for a short period of time, do not stop taking the medication without speaking with your doctor. A gradual reduction in dose is recommended when stopping this medication to avoid withdrawal effects.

When must Mogadon not be used?

  • If you are allergic to the group of medicines known as benzodiazepines, eg. Diazepam, Chlordiazepoxide, Nitrazepam, Temazepam.
  • If you are allergic to Mogadon or any of the ingredients it contains.
  • If you suffer from lung disease.
  • If you suffer from myasthenia gravis (severe muscle tiredness).
  • If you are suffering from a psychiatric illness or a personality disorder.
  • If you suffer from sleep apnoea (difficulty breathing while asleep).
